Taiwan's state-run Taiwan Power Co. and CPC Corp. won the 2025 Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards (AREA) presented June 27 in Bangkok, Thailand for commitment to social responsibility and sustainable operations.
Taipei City-based Taipower was a winner in the Green Leadership and Investment in People categories, marking the eighth consecutive year that the firm won the prestigious regional award.
According to the utility provider, the awards recognized the company's unwavering commitment to social responsibility while it undertakes the core task of providing the nation's stable power supply. It successfully balances the brief with environmental protection and personnel training.
Achievements so far include publishing an environmental white paper in 2019 to detail its work on environmental sustainability; re-stocking ocean and river fish species since 2002; and holding beach cleanups for 31 years in a row.
CPC Corp., the country's leading energy firm based in the southern port city of Kaohsiung, was a winner in the Corporate Sustainability Reporting category for the third consecutive time for its comprehensive and transparent reporting in line with global standards. The firm has won 14 AREA awards in the past six years.
The CPC began implementing environmental, social and governance strategies since establishing a sustainable operation committee in 2003, with its 2023 annual report stressing commitment to environmental protection. The award will serve as a great inspiration as the firm continues to fulfill Taiwan's net-zero emission policy goal, the CPC said.

The second round of trade talks regarding the pending U.S. tariff imposed on Taiwan imports wrapped up June 26 in Washington, with constructive progress seen in the negotiations, according to the Executive Yuan.
Led by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun and Yang Jen-ni, trade representative from the EY's Office of Trade Negotiations, the Taiwan delegation also included officials from the Ministries of Agriculture, Economic Affairs, and Health and Welfare, as well as the National Security Council. Their counterparts during the two-day negotiations were U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the EY said.
According to the EY, the recently completed negotiations laid a solid foundation that will strengthen the economic and trade partnership between the two countries. Taiwan and the U.S. are gradually reaching a consensus on tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers, as well as enhancing supply chain resilience, the EY said, adding that they are committed to promoting trade balance while creating mutual opportunities for economic and industrial development.
Both sides further agreed that expanding bilateral investment would enhance mutual prosperity, the EY said, adding that as Taiwan enterprises have increased their investment in the U.S. in recent years, U.S. companies have done the same.

Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding with Czechia on upgrading key infrastructure and energy facilities in Ukraine June 27, underscoring the two sides' dedication to helping the war-ravaged country achieve power system resilience and a stable drinking water supply.

According to the MOC, the finding resulted from a cooperative project conducted from 2017 to 2019 that has provided invaluable insight into the marine expansion of late Paleolithic peoples in East Asia.
Tokyo University professor Yousuke Kaifu and Lin Chih-hsing, former NMP vice director, along with other researchers, finished analyses of ocean currents and sea conditions and published an article in Science Advances. A related study in the same journal saw other members of the team use computer simulations to show that a sailless canoe could make it to western Japan's Yaeyama Islands from eastern Taiwan.
In the practical experiments, Paleolithic tools such as stone axes were used to make a 7.5-meter long canoe, the researchers said. A crew of five then embarked on a two-day journey to Yonaguni Island, crossing the powerful Kuroshio Current, the ministry said, adding that a documentary with Chinese subtitles has been uploaded to the NMP's YouTube channel.

President Lai Ching-te said that the upcoming 41st Hang Kuang and city-town resilience exercises would demonstrate the country's strong commitment to self-defense.
Lai hosted the 4th meeting of the Whole-of-Society-Resilience Committee June 26 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He emphasized that protecting the country is not only the responsibility of the armed forces, but also that of ordinary citizens.
The president said that it has been a year since the committee was established, adding that a special budget of NT$150 billion (US$5.1billion) has been allocated to strengthen national defense capability through procurement of equipment including coastal guard defenses and unmanned vehicles.
The Hang Kuang drills, set to take place July 9-18, test military personnel on tackling grey zone tactics, rapid reaction, conflict preparedness, operational strategic communications and use of new equipment.
Alongside the Hang Kuang exercises, a series of city-town resilience exercises will be held, the president said and added that in March, field exercises were conducted to examine coordination between central and local governments as well as public and private sectors. Since April 10, further drills were implemented in eight cities and counties including eastern Taiwan's Hualien County, Keelung City in the north and the outlying Lienchiang County.
The president further noted that three more drills will be staged July 15-17 in the central city of Taichung, the southern city of Tainan and Taipei City while air and civil defense exercises will take place in 22 cities and counties.

Taiwan's Ministry of Environment organized a carbon pricing workshop June 24-26 in Berlin to promote bilateral exchanges as the government strives to implement the country's own cap and emissions trading system (ETS) on a trial basis in 2026.
According to the MOENV, the Taiwan side was represented by a delegation led by Environmental Minister Peng Chi-ming. During his opening remarks, Peng said Taiwan kicked off its carbon fee system this year. In contrast to systems that levy fixed rates, ETS can better reflect the actual carbon reduction costs incurred by industries, he said, adding that both President Lai Ching-te and Premier Cho Jung-tai support creating a domestic ETS as soon as possible.
To this end, the minister said the MOENV is working to enhance information sharing and communication with all parties of interest, adding that the workshop will also help related parties better understand global trends.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung met with Cabinet-level National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Cheng-wen June 25 in Taipei City to discuss interagency cooperation on technology diplomacy, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The MOFA's Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project involves eight flagship programs: new energy and carbon rights collaboration, trusted internet networks and digital governance, smart agriculture, smart medicine, smart science park overseas demonstration projects, semiconductor supply chain resilience, sovereign artificial intelligence, and sustainable tourism, the ministry said.
At the meeting, Lin and Wu reached an agreement that the NSTC would assist the MOFA with the establishment of operational systems in specific smart technological parks overseas, with the first such mechanism set to be implemented at the Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park in Minga Guazú.
As for personnel cultivation, the council will link its International Internship Pilot Program with the ministry's eight flagship projects to offer outstanding students from allied nations and like-minded countries internship opportunities in order to grow the high-tech talent pool.
In recent years the NSTC has been actively promoting global technological cooperation, signing five science and technology agreements between Taiwan and Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the U.S., the ministry said. The MOFA's Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project involves eight flagship programs: new energy and carbon rights collaboration, trusted internet networks and digital governance, smart agriculture, smart medicine, smart science park overseas demonstration projects, semiconductor supply chain resilience, sovereign artificial intelligence, and sustainable tourism, the ministry said.
At the meeting, Lin and Wu reached an agreement that the NSTC would assist the MOFA with the establishment of operational systems in specific smart technological parks overseas, with the first such mechanism set to be implemented at the Taiwan-Paraguay Smart Technology Park in Minga Guazú.
As for personnel cultivation, the council will link its International Internship Pilot Program with the ministry's eight flagship projects to offer outstanding students from allied nations and like-minded countries internship opportunities in order to grow the high-tech talent pool.
In recent years the NSTC has been actively promoting global technological cooperation, signing five science and technology agreements between Taiwan and Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the U.S., the ministry said. By working together with the NSTC and other relevant agencies, the MOFA aims to stimulate global collaboration in emerging technologies. (POC-E)

The support extended by the EU and Canada for peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said June 24.
The MOFA's response came following the Joint Statement of the EU-Canada Summit held June 23 in Brussels that involved European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
According to the statement, as security in the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions is increasingly interconnected, the two sides reaffirmed their shared interest in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, including in the East and South China Seas and across the Taiwan Strait.
The EU and Canada also said they will continue working with regional partners to uphold a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific region based on international law.
The MOFA said the latest statement follows the ones released after the Group of Seven Foreign Ministers' Meeting in March and the G7 Summit earlier this month, reflecting that maintaining cross-strait peace and stability is now a global consensus.
As a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan is committed to working with like-minded partners to defend the rules-based international order and ensure peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added. (SFC-E)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung met with Mami Mizutori, former special representative of the United Nations secretary-general for disaster risk reduction and head of the U.N. Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, to exchange views on global disaster preparedness June 24 in Taipei City.
In his remarks, Lin lauded Mizutori's keynote speech during a Global Cooperation Training Framework workshop on disaster governance and sustainable operation underway through June 25. He added that Taiwan and Japan have a deep bond, as evidenced by reciprocal support during natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amid the global threats of climate change and a potential energy crisis, Taiwan has been proactive in strengthening societal resilience and enhancing disaster prevention and reduction capabilities while expanding its international participation, the minister said. He expressed hope that the two sides would continue to deepen partnership by expanding substantive collaboration across the board.
In response, Mizutori said that risk management is a shared global challenge and acknowledged the firm cooperative foundation laid by GCTF partners. She anticipated that framework members would reinforce collaboration to jointly help countries in the global south upgrade disaster response capabilities and enhance resilience.
Mizutori further pointed out that the concept of whole-of-society resilience proposed by President Lai Ching-te aligns with the U.N.'s Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. She conveyed eagerness for Taiwan to share its experiences with the world as it continues to implement the initiative.
According to the Presidential Office, Mizutori also had an audience with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim June 23 at the PO, during which Hsiao said she looked forward to working with Japan to strengthen mutual resilience. (POC-E)
